Some thoughts about warranty....

Have you noticed many companies in the solar industry seems to advertise a 25 year warranty. How could you possibly go wrong with that? Dig a little deeper into the warranty documents and you will find the 25 year warranty virtually impossible to claim against. This is because it is a performance based warranty only and most manufacturers require you to have your panels tested (Standard Test Condition environment) in an overseas laboratory. So, un-install your panels, ship them overseas for testing and maybe then have a claim to make. Lets face it, most people aren't going to do it. When you get past this basically useless warranty, you will discover most lower grade panels are covered by a 1 or 2 year manufacturer warranty, maybe 5 at best. Furthermore, the importer of the component must cover the warranty; if you can't find the importer you don't have any warranty. The inverter, framing and installation are all covered by separate warranties. Do your homework and get the facts.

When it gets hot....

Solar electricity (photovoltaics) is about converting light, not heat. More light energy = more electrical energy. All panels are affected by heat in some form. Better quality panels generally are less affected than poorer quality panels due to their engineering. Good designing is about factoring all potential losses (including heat) and allowing for them when calculating the energy production. So, it certainly is important to know how your panels are going to cope with heat, more important to know you are dealing with a qualified and experienced designer whom will account for the losses when building your system. You then get real numbers without fear of lost production.

Thought you might be interested in the comments made by the installer of the I/E meter who I understand is a solar installer himself.  He had just come from an installation that he had had to condemn because of poor workmanship and when he opened our meter box his comment was "I wish they were all as good as this!"
